  • OUR STORY BEGINS IN SOUTH AFRICA

AFRICA'S BOTANICAL TREASURES

Africa has many wonderful indigenous medicinal plants and herbs that are high in hydrating and anti-ageing properties. We make use of the purifying essence of these plants, namely rooibos, aloe Ferox, marula and African potato. Through extensive research, Africology harness these amazing ingredients, naturally, and formulate the perfect combinations for effective skin and body care. It has become our passion to share these benefits with the rest of the world.

AFRICAN POTATO
The African potato is full of sterols and sterolins which are helpful in the treatment of acne, eczema and psoriasis. It helps boosts the immune system and has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

ROOIBOS
Green rooibos is harvested from its natural South African mountainous habitat.  It naturally contains alpha-hydroxy acid, a compound that is beneficial for maintaining healthy skin, and is rich in iron, potassium, copper, manganese, magnesium, calcium, zinc and sodium.  It has fantastic antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It is useful in treating skin problems such as eczema, nappy rash and acne.  It has a soothing effect on the skin.

MARULA SEED OIL
Called “miracle oil,” marula is extracted from the kernel of the marula fruit and is considered one of Africa’s botanical gems.  Rich in antioxidants including vitamin c and e, it helps protect against free radical damage and promotes the production of collagen and elastin.  It contains high levels of essential fatty acids, like omegas-6 and -9, that help keep the skin nourished and reduce redness through their anti-inflammatory properties.  It is light and quickly absorbed by the skin so won’t clog your pores.  It is antimicrobial and non-comedogenic, making it ideal for treating acne blemishes and scarring.  It helps keep the skin hydrated by preventing trans-epidermal water loss.

ALOE FEROX
Aloe ferox is a succulent native to southern Africa.  This stemless plant has thick, full leaves with serrated edges. The leaves contain a gel with a variety of uses which include calming, soothing and hydrating sunburnt, irritated and sensitised skin. It is rich in nutritional and healing compounds and minerals, amino acids, lipids, monosaccharides, phytosterols, vitamins E, B, C & zinc. It has anti-inflammatory properties and aids in reducing scar tissue.  It helps in the treatment of psoriasis, eczema, burns and facial oedema. It is a natural astringent and oxygenator (drawing and holding oxygen in the skin), stimulates cell regeneration and helps replenish lost moisture.

ROSEHIP SEED OIL
Rosehip seed oil is an excellent source of vitamin A and C.  Vitamin C helps reduce the appearance of dark spots, age spots and hyperpigmentation.  Rosehip seed oil works particularly well on dry skin as it's a powerful emollient and moisturiser.  It penetrates the skin easily and has antioxidant, diuretic and astringent properties.  It is a natural exfoliant that has the ability to boost skin regeneration and elasticity.

NATURAL ANTI-OXIDANTS

Dimethyl MEA is also known as DMAE or dimethyl aminoethanol.  It is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that helps stabilise cell membranes and protect them from free radical attack. DMAE promotes the production of the chemical acetylcholine, which is responsible for creating muscle tone, and therefore helps tighten muscles to keep your skin looking smooth and firm.

R-Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a powerful antioxidant that is fat and water soluble, which allows it to access all parts of the cell, giving it tremendous ability to trap free radicals wherever they may be. One of the leading causes of ageing is free radical damage.  It has the ability to recycle other antioxidants and is an important co-factor in the production of cellular energy.

Acetyl-l-carnitine is central to the production of cellular energy as it triggers the breakdown of fats into fatty acids inside our fat cells.  It creates activity in the cell, the fat is turned into energy and broken down without losing water, which in turn helps keep the cells healthy.

Ubiquinone is also known as coenzyme q1o and is an antioxidant produced by the body to reduce oxidative damage to cells.  It reduces with age and exposure to sun.  Applied topically, it penetrates the skin easily to help reduce UV damage and assist cells in building collagen and elastin, thereby minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  Its anti-inflammatory action helps calm and soothe sensitive, irritated skin.

ANTI-OXIDANTS

Vitamin C Ester, ascorbyl palmitate is a non-acidic form of Vitamin C.  It’s an effective antioxidant, encourages collagen production and helps prevent cellular ageing.  It is fat soluble so is able to penetrate the skin and deliver antioxidants quicker than water soluble forms of Vitamin C.

Vitamin E is a very powerful anti-oxidant, which promotes a better and younger-looking appearance of the skin. Protects the skin from internal metabolic processes and also detrimental external factors. Also known to assist with reducing UV light damage.

Vitamin A stimulates cell regeneration as well as increased cell metabolism, and smoothes the skin by strengthening the skin’s elasticity.

HOW WE FORMULATE

We focus on ‘capturing the intelligence of nature’ during our formulation process to bring you a skincare line with the primary goal of inhibiting the ageing process naturally. Each ingredient is chosen for its efficacy in improving the skin’s own defenses and purity.

We believe in responsible formulating practices, and therefore only use safe, non-toxic preservatives and where possible, organic ingredients. We macerate our plants in a marula, rosehip and aloe vera oil blend, using a very slow process. We take great care not to harm the vital mineral content of the plants.

Our preservative system is lactoperioxidase, an enzyme secreted from mammary, salivary and other mucosal glands, which functions as a natural antibacterial agent. It is naturally occurring in milk and is used as a stabilising ingredient to help improve formulation stability and product shelf-life. It further assists in maintaining the integrity of our products, while fighting infection and degradation.

We choose ingredients that are pure, naturally active and work in harmony with the body.

“Every product in the Africology range is the result of intuitive blending and careful sourcing”

NATURAL INGREDIENTS FROM PLANT TO SKIN

Therapeutic in its approach, Africology uses many natural ingredients that are bioidentical to our biology. Our aim is always to ensure that the body and biology are treated in harmony whilst enjoying a truly authentic African offering.

We allow nature to contribute its wonderful fragrances to our products by natural means, calming and soothing the senses and creating a relaxed state of mind.

We only use unrefined oils in their natural state, with high percentages of vitamin A, B1, B2, and B6, and mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids and Vitamin E. Our products therefore have a thicker, richer texture than those containing refined oils. The colour of our creams and oils may change due to them not going through this refining process.

Using nearly twenty different antioxidants and a variety of anti-inflammatory and hydrating ingredients, Africology has created a powerful skincare range that will help revitalise the skin while slowing down the ageing process.

Backed by full toxicology reports and skin-patch testing; Africology products are safe and effective.

All our products are free from:

Parabens | Sodium laureth sulfate | Petrolatum or petrochemicals DEA, MEA or TEA | Phthalates | Imidazolidinyl urea and DMDM Hydantoin Phenoxyethanol | Isopropyl alcohol sd-40 | Methylchloroisithiazolinone, Propylene glycol or synthetic stabilisers | Mineral oils, refined plant oils or animal derived stearates

AROMATHERAPY

Pure distilled plant oils, known as aromatherapy or essential oils, have a gentle yet effective ability to work therapeutically to uplift the mind and balance the body, contributing to general well-being.

Stress negatively impacts the health of the epidermis. Our essential oils penetrate the skin, uplift the spirit, and balance emotions. Essential oils enter the blood via the capillary network, and circulate throughout the body where they have a systemic effect. That’s why we simply won’t use any fragrances in our products, only natural plant essential oils.

Aromas have a powerful effect as they trigger memories and elicit emotions. Africology skincare and body products do more than just feed the skin; through the power of smell they invoke memories that help bring balance to the body and mind.

DEFINED CONNECTION THROUGH SCENT

Renchia Droganis is known for creating beautiful fragrances. She grows lavender and roses on the family’s smallholding farm in Knysna, South Africa. Together with her daughter Eliana and son Christos, they have mastered the ability to create and blend exquisite fragrance combinations and blends for private labels and hotels.

The Africology fragrance is a very distinct scent. It is often instantly recognised by people when near an Africology spa or store. Because our sense of smell plays such an important role in memory and emotions, we create products that are defined by scent. Our signature scent is unique and will stimulate powerful memories of time spent with our brand.
